Exercise and Diet

Exercise and Diet:

Recently I have had an awakening regarding the importance of a healthy diet.  I have always exercised and always watched my diet.  That being said I would occasionally give in to cravings and didn’t always watch the sodium and preservative content of the foods I was consuming.

Until about two years ago I used to run three or four times a week and lift weights three times a week all while being “pretty good” with my diet.  Despite all of this exercise, my body didn’t make any substantial changes.  Sure, exercise kept my cardiovascular system in good shape and I was toned – to a point - but my abs continued hide under a thin layer of “stuff”.

I always suspected that the flaws in my diet, regardless of how insignificant that they seemed were what was holding me back from making the changes that I desired.  Mind you, I am not a superficial person but I was aware that the same dietary faults that were preventing me from seeing my abs were also contributing to the stuffed, tired and bloated feeling that I was experiencing after most of my meals.  I guess that when I see a fit person with defined abs I assume that they feel good versus feeling the way I did.

Aside from these personal revelations, Sandra Blackie, fitness guru and friend of my office once told me that the way we appear physically is about 75% diet and 25% exercise.   Over the last few months I have made the effort to implement this idea.

I began a purification diet that involved Standard Process Supplements combined with a complete cleaning of my diet.  I eliminated all foods that contained preservatives, dairy (which I knew for years made me ill), processed sugars and starches.  What a dramatic change!  I have leaned out considerably, I don’t get sick after meals anymore and I have more energy to do my exercise.

I look at all those years of running and lifting weights and think how most of that effort was wasted by my poor diet.  I guess I learned that I should listen to authority figures regarding my conditioning much like I expect my chiropractic patients to listen to my recommendations regarding my treatment for their neck pain, back pain, headaches, etc.

Scared of the Chiropractor

Scared of the Chiropractor

I had a new patient that was visiting San Diego from Hawaii the other day.  She was in her mid forties and had severe neck pain.  She was referred to my chiropractic office in San Diego for treatment of neck pain that began after sleeping funny on the airplane.

The first thing out of her mouth when she walked into my office was “I need to tell you that I have never been to a chiropractor before and I am really nervous!”

I found out later on that she also told my assistant the same thing when she called for an appointment.

Of course my response was “why in the world are you in my office?”  After all, she was on vacation, in pain and in a type of doctors’ office that she had never been to before and really wasn’t comfortable with.

It turns out the people that she was visiting were patients of mine and they thought that I could help her and she followed their lead.  I also promised her that I would not recommend treatment if I wasn’t sure that I could help relieve her neck pain.

I examined her and found that she had the typical, “slept wrong” kind of neck pain.  She couldn’t tilt her head backwards or turn it to the right side without wincing in pain.

I asked her if she had done anything for it since it started hurting and she said that she had been using heat to help sooth it.  I hear this often.  People use heat because it is soothing.  I explained to her that heat actually causes more inflammation and that she should switch to ice packs right away.

I could tell that she was getting more and more comfortable with me and she was getting more comfortable with being at the chiropractor.

I told her that getting a chiropractic adjustment would help restore her range of motion, that it probably wouldn’t hurt and that I would not need to see her more than 5 to 6 times based on what I saw in the examination.

With nervous anticipation, she let me adjust her neck.  She let out a little yelp when I adjusted the joints on the right side of her neck and then immediately said “THAT FELT GOOD – IT FELT LIKE EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED”.

I ended up treating her three times – Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.  She told me that she was completely healed after Tuesdays’ treatment but she wanted to get treated one more time “just to make sure”.

She told me that she gets the stiff neck five or six times a year and normally it takes about ten days to totally resolve.  She was elated that it only took two days this time and she said that she was so happy that she tried chiropractic care.

The patient also said that she was going to find a chiropractor in Hawaii to begin maintenance treatments.  This was a term that she no doubt learned from my patients that referred her for chiropractic care.

Druf Free Pain Relief San Diego

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Care
is popular especially with people not wanting to use pain killers.

Our population has a passion for fitness and exercise.  Chiropractic treatment helps keep neck pain, back pain and other body aches from slowing us down.

Neck pain and back pain typically respond very well to chiropractic treatment.  Chiropractic care helps restore normal joint motion which is vital to a healthy neck and back.

One of the wonderful benefits of chiropractic treatment is its ability to help active people avoid neck pain, back pain and other spinal injuries.

Getting chiropractic adjustments in a regular basis helps your spine maintain its full range of motion and flexibility.  Typically, it is a loss of normal range of motion and flexibility that exposes us to injuries.  Chiropractic care that is delivered prior to an aggravation, in other words “when the patient is not in pain” is a perfect example of preventative healthcare.

Chiropractic adjustments gently push the joint through its entire range of motion.  When your joints are moved through their full range of motion by a trained chiropractor, tight muscles associated with that joint are stretched out and scar tissue that has formed in and around those joints is broken down.

Usually, having your spine adjusted is not a painful procedure.  Most of the time, the patients in my chiropractic clinic feel a sense of pressure relief and relaxation in their backs when they are adjusted.

This feeling of pressure release and relaxation is due to a number events that occur during an adjustment.

When the spine is adjusted, there is a reflexive relaxation of tight muscles that occurs.  Relaxed muscles are much more comfortable than tight, spasmed muscles.

Another event that takes place with an adjustment involves the “pain gate”.  Adjustments trigger the “pain gate” in the nervous system which, as it implies, decreases our sensations of pain.

On a mechanical level, chiropractic care stretches tight muscle and ligaments and helps breakdown restrictive scar tissue.  This effect improves our spines’ range of motion resulting is feeling of increased flexibility.

As a chiropractor, a healthy percentage of my treatments revolve around spinal maintenance and improving athletic performance.

Chiropractic treatment is a vital part of maintaining your health.
